HOAs often require homeowners to pay monthly, quarterly or annual fees. Oftentimes, if you live in an area with a homeowners association, you’ll need to get permission from the association to make exterior modifications, such as installing a fence or changing exterior colors. HOAs can even stipulate what can be placed on a front porch (e.g. potted plants only). Neighborhood associations are less stringent and focus more on promoting community camaraderie. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with neighborhood covenants and bylaws before buying property in a particular area.
